John Riley Banning of Oxford son of the late John B. Banning and Rosie McVey Banning was born August 31, 1915 in Melbourne. He died on March 8, 2002 at home in Oxford. He was 86.

Mr. Banning was united in marriage to Velda Tyrena Carter on December 5, 1946 at Sidney. To this union, five children were born. He served his country in the US Army during World War II in the 557th Armored Artillery Battlefield. He was self-employed as a farmer and for several years he was a forklift operator at the flooring mill at Calico Rock. He loved to hunt and tend his garden. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two sons, Loranzo Banning and wife Leslie of Oxford and Doran Banning of Melbourne; three daughters, Loraine Robinson and husband Randy of Salem, Rhonda Smith of Calico Rock and Johniece Sherrell and husband Randy of Oxford; one sister, Charity Chadwick of Salem; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Velda, two grandchildren, Jason and Zachariah Banning; three brothers, Sherman, Carl and Raymond Banning; one sister Mamie Williams and his parents.

Funeral services were held March 10, 2002 at Cox-Blevins Chapel with Author Barber officiating. Interment was at Springhill Cemetery in Oxford under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
