White River Currant, Calico Rock, Arkansas, May 30, 1996:

George William Hammett of Brockwell, son of the late George L. and Mary Martin Hammett, was born July 2, 1921 in Wideman. He died May 22, 1996 in Batesville. He was 74.

Mr. Hammett was united in marriage to Lena Simmons on February 7, 1953 in Melbourne. He was an Army Veteran and a Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist member.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three sisters, Rhudine McCurly, Armilda Skidmore and Virginia Roberts all of Oxford; four nephews, two nieces and two adopted grandchildren, Morgan and Dalton Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Services were held May 25, 1996 at the Crouch Chapel on Melbourne with Brother Price Lovelace and Brother Jesse McDaniel officiating.

Pallbearers were Harold Hammett, Charles Hammett, Paul Jones, Harold Hamley, Randy Carpenter and Harold Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers were Revel Simmons, Lowell Melton, J. B. McCurly and Pat Chadwick.

Interment was at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Oxford under the direction of Howard Funeral Home in Melbourne.
