Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, September 3, 1943:
Faces Manslaughter Charge in Death of Girl
G. W. Yancy, 14, through his father, Maxie Yancy, waived examination in justice of the peace court at Melbourne Monday afternoon on a charge of involuntary man-slaughter in the death of Miss Venala Simmons, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Simmons of Brockwell.
It is alleged that Miss Simmons was knocked down by a horse ridden by young Yancy on highway 9 a quarter of a mile north of Brockwell the night of August 23, according to information from Ernie Wright, prosecuting attorney. Miss Simmons died of injuries at a Batesville hospital August 27.
Information was filed in circuit court and a $500 bond set for Yancey's appearance for trial at the September 27 regular term of circuit court at Melbourne.
It is reported that Miss Simmons was returning home from church at Brockwell, along with Miss Winnie Melton, Nix Melton and Rex Neal Forrest when the rider raced the horse through the group along the side of the highway. Nix Melton was knocked unconscious and Miss Melton received a knee injury. The back of Miss Simmons head was crushed when she was knocked to the highway.
Burial was at Pleasant Ridge Friday. Services were conducted by Eld. Wilson Taylor, Baptist minister and arrangements were in charge of Higginbotham Funeral Service. She is survived by a sister, Miss Arcie Simmons of Brockwell.
