Edith Simmons, 101, died Saturday morning, Dec. 20 (2008) at Hillcrest Home in Harrison.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Holt Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the chapel with the Rev. Robert Shaddox officiating. Burial will be at Melbourne Cemetery at Melbourne. Pallbearers will be BranDon Mace, Trevor Mace, Bill Peerce, Matt Peerce and Craig Peerce. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Blake and Amanda Chitsey, the staff at Hillcrest Home and all her friends.
Edith was born June 12, 1907, at Newburg, a daughter of George W. and Nellie (Clayton) Newsom.
She was a member of Harrison First Baptist Church where she served as librarian for many years, retiring at age 89. She also taught the Dorcas Sunday school class.
Her favorite pastime was painting which she began when she was 74. She produced over 100 paintings. She taught piano lessons and also wrote a song that was published by the Stamps Baxter Music Company. Several of her poems were also published.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Ellis Simmons; and three brothers, Marvin, Herman and Glen Newsom.
Surviving are her son, Dean Simmons and his wife, Lilly; grandchildren, Steve Simmons and Carol Sands; step-grandchildren, Amy Dickey, Debbie Peerce and Larry Dickey; great-grandchildren, Lacy and Chad Frost, Tori Simmons, BranDon and Justina Mace, Trevor Mace and Cassidy Sands; a sister, Reva Kent; and several nieces and nephews.
