She was born in Green Forest, AR to John Lemuel Porter and Maggie May DeBurger Porter. A longtime elementary school teacher at Alpena, she was affectionately known to her students as "Miss Helen." She was a member of a non-denominational church which met in her home as long as her health permitted.
