Dr. Chas. Roe Dies at Home at Viola Tuesday

Dr. Charles Edward Roe, aged 68 widely known physician of this section died Tuesday at his home at Viola. He had been in ill health for several months.

Dr. Roe was born at Henderson, Baxter County, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billie Roe. His early life was spent at Pineville. He attended University of Arkansas, but did not graduate. After being licensed, he began the practice of medicine at Ash Flat in 1915. He moved to Wild Cherry a year later and in 1923 he located at Viola, where he lived until his death. He married the former Sarah Elizabeth Ducker at Pineville in 1904.

Dr. Roe was a baseball player of note. He played for teams at McCrory and Wynne before signing a contract with Memphis of the then Class A Southern Association. He was also with Little Rock for a few months and later played with Pine Bluff of the Cotton States League. Dr. Poe was an avid ball fan up to his death, and much of the know how his famous son, Elwyn (Preacher) Roe, of the Brooklyn Dodgers, uses to baffle National League batters was learned from his father. Dr. Roe for many years had been instrumental in maintaining an amateur baseball team at Viola and four of his sons played on the team. He was active in playing the game merely as a hobby, until about two years ago. For several years he pitched an annual game at Viola, and in the game two years ago he went the full nine inning route.

Dr Roe was a member of the Methodist Church and was a Mason.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Smith of Viola and Rev. J. E. Williamson of Pineville; were held at the Viola Methodist Church, Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Burial was in Viola Cemetery.

Survivors include four sons, Elwyn Roe of West Plains, Mo., Cecil Roe of Viola, Roy Roe of Hartford, Ark., and Glen Roe of West Plains, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Essie Franks of West Plains; one brother, M. B. Roe of Arizona; and four sisters, Mrs. Zada Rosaaen of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Dora Eddings of Arizona, Mrs. Mittie Baker of Stroud, Okla., and Mrs. Willie Latimer of Fordyce, Ark.
