BROOKS, Isham Arthur - Isham Arthur Brooks was born in South Carolina in 1836; moved to Georgia with his parents and there in 1859 was married to Martha Cowart; moved to Benton county, Ark. in 1878, settling near the present site of Gravette, where he spent the most of his life, moving to Texas a few years ago, and last year returned, locating near Sulphur Springs. He farmed all his life, except for serving as Postmaster of Gravette about 20 years ago. To the above union 8 children were born, 4 boys and 4 girls; five still are living: Eli C. of Maysville; Benson B. of Texas; William and Mrs. Margaret Russell of Gravette and Jason of Ozark, Ark. Mrs. Brooks died early in 1875 and on Dec. 28, 1876 Mr. Brooks was married to Lucinda Watson. Seven children were born to this union, one daughter, Lou, died here some years ago and the following survive: Tildy Hopkins, Mary Moore, Ethel Moore, Isham, Jr., Carrie Carter and Winnie Bridges. There also survive Mrs. Brooks at Sulphur Springs and 87 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren. Mr. Brooks professed religion 53 years ago and united with the Long Swamp Missionary Baptist church; and 6 years ago joined the Nazarene Holiness church. He was faithful in his religion, an upright, honest citizen and was beloved by his family and a host of friends and admired as one of our sturdy pioneers. He died Oct. 5, 1919 at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 4 days, laid to rest in Bethel cemetery, Eld. T.F. Jones conducting the funeral on Oct. 6th.

BROOKS, Isom A. - Isom A. Brooks died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1919 at Siloam Springs, where he underwent an operation for cancer of the stomach. Funeral and burial took place Monday, the body being laid to rest in Bethel cemetery south of Gravette. Mr. Brooks raised a large family of sturdy citizens and was a successful and honest citizen, accumulating perhaps $20,000 in world's goods. He was postmaster at Gravette for a term; later resided a few years in Texas and a few months ago moved back and bought a fine farm near Sulphur Springs. Nearly all of his big family of boys and girls, some of this community, some of Oklahoma and other points, were here during the father's last illness. A suitable obituary will appear later.
