Officials Identify Men Who Died in Flood

Bentonville officials have identified two men whose bodies were found Tuesday between Opal Road and Southwest Airport Boulevard.

Police said Billy Morgan, 56, of Bentonville and Steven Beaty, 50, of Centerton died after the pickup they were in was apparently swept off a low-water bridge on Opal Road.

A Bentonville city worker found Beaty's body tangled in a tree about 25 yards downstream from the pickup, in a tributary to Osage Creek. The worker was checking a report of a pickup being in the creek.

A Bentonville resident found Morgan's body while authorities were on Opal Road where the pickup was swept away. Robbie Kesner was checking his fence row near the creek when he found Morgan's body.

Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson said the investigation was continuing Wednesday, but authorities are treating the incident as a motor vehicle accident.

Simpson said accident reconstruction specialists are attempting to find out what happened — such as which direction the pickup was headed when the accident occurred.

"As far as who was driving, as much as we hate to say it, that's something that may never be determined," Simpson said Wednesday. "After the accident, everything got thoroughly washed."

The pickup was registered to Morgan.

Blood samples were taken from both bodies, standard procedure in a fatality accident, Simpson said. The samples were sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine if alcohol was involved.

"We think the accident happened late afternoon on Monday." Simpson said. "We've got some cellphone records that are pointing to that. But we're still trying to determine that for sure."

The are two low-water bridges on Opal Road within one-quarter mile of each other. City officials said a barrier was in the road blocking the low water bridge the truck apparently washed of of. A barrier also blocked the other low water bridge.

Cora Beaty, Steven Beaty's mother, said Wednesday the men were cousins and childhood friends.

"Steve had moved to Oklahoma, moved back here and the two got back together," Cora Beaty said. "I'm just glad they didn't wash on out to the creek and they never find them. That would have been my worst nightmare."

Donations to help with the cost of Beaty's funeral may be made to the Epting Funeral Home, 709 N. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville, his mother said.
