Augustus "Gus" C Dixon
Gus was the son of William C. and Eliza Clardy-Dixon. He married Elizabeth J. Powell, born June 10, 1859. They were the parents of Wm. Albert, Harry P., Edward Hugh, Maud, Clyde and May. Gus was the brother of Sarah Frances Dixon, Virginia Warner Dixon, Owen Herbert Dixon- writer of the Matthew Dixon Genealogy-1940, Jeffery Dixon, Roberta Lee Dixon, Dora Alice Dixon and Willie Dixon.
Gus was in the mercantile business early in life. He and his brother Jeffery ran the Dixon Brothers firm until 1900. They were wholesale dealers in cedar posts and poles they shipped to many places. He sold out to Jeffery and went in business with sons Hugh and Harry in a store at Boswell. Gus bought back the mercantile business and Jeffery went to Harrison.
Gus later served as school director, mayor, and two terms as county clerk. He was also Clerk of the House of Representatives, and a member of the State legislature. He was praised for his neatness and accuracy recording court matters. He was also a census taker for a part of Izard county. He was known for his honesty, generosity, and jovial nature. He wrote reminiscences of his life in his later years. He died at home in Mt Olive.
