Vernon Earl Smith, 52, of Newport News, VA, formerly of Greenbrier, passed away Monday, November 14, 2005.

He was born in Greenbrier, to Velma Smith & the late Artie C Smith. He was also known as “Bubba Church”, “Bubba’, “Shouting Church”, “Vern Vern” & “Esquire”, since he would often say that’s what the “E” in his name stood for. He attended Pine Street School through the seventh grade then went on to Greenbrier High School. Upon graduating, he enrolled in AM & N College (known as UAPB), majoring in Vocational Art & minored in Electronics &pledged Phi Beta Sigma. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in May 1974. Thereafter, Vernon had been gainfully employed by the following: PolyVend of Conway, Club Products of Little Rock, Prescolite of El Dorado & the Little Rock School District, & J V Gill of Newport News, VA. He was a longstanding member of the Arkansas/Kansas Hunting Club.

He gave his life to Christ at an early age through the leadership of Rev S L V Johnson at Mt Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He served as a member of the Sunday School Boys Quartet. Later, he moved his membership to First Baptist Highland Park in Little Rock, where he served as a deacon. After moving to Newport News, Vernon joined First Baptist Church at Denbigh.

To mourn his passing, he leaves his mother, Velma Smith; 2 daughters, Cicily A Smith, Charity Vernice Dorsey & husband Jerrod, all of Little Rock; 2 grandchildren, Amari James & Genesis Smith; 6 sisters, Helen Kelley of Chicago, Margaret Stuckey of Dallas, TX, Juanelle Buyck & husband Jeff of Flint, MI, Vivian Allison of St Louis, MO, Verla Smith of Greenbrier, & Hester Collins of Santa Rosa, CA; & brothers, Leonard Kelley Smith & wife Mary of Cleveland, OH, Albert Smith & wife Anna of Conway, Kenneth Smith & wife Debbie of Newport News, VA, & Thomas Smith & wife Paula of Chicago, IL; 2 aunts, Onighter Morris of Kansas City, KS, & Geneva Davis of Kansas City, MO; & a host of nieces, nephews, cousins & friends. He was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, but most of all a great friend.
