Samuel Ballard, Oxford Citizen, Passes Away
Samuel Sanford Ballard, familiarly known as “Uncle Samp”, of Oxford’s most well respected citizens passed away quite suddenly at his home in Oxford July 4, 1957, at the age of 87 years 3 months and 27 days. Mr. Ballard was born in Illinois March 7, 1870, but the greater part of his life was spent in the vicinity of Oxford, Arkansas.
He was married in 1891 at Wiseman, Arkansas to Miss Lillian Wiseman, who preceded him in death by seventeen years having passed away October 6, 1940.
Mr. and Mrs. Ballard were the parents of three children, two sons, W. F. Ballard “Willie” and M. L. Ballard “Leslie” both of Oxford, who survive him, and one daughter, Mrs. Curtis Mason “Audrey” who passed away in 1925.
Mr Ballard was a good neighbor, a loyal friend, a loving father, a devoted companion and a staunch and faithful Christian.
In addition to his immediate family he is survived by eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, a larger number of nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Oxford Methodist Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon July 7 with Rev. Remmel Rowden and Rev. Hugh Cooper as officiating ministers. The song services were directed by Earl Dillard with Mrs. Otho Webb at the piano.
Following the funeral services the body was laid to rest in the Oxford Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Service of Salem.
Pall bearers were Arlin Helm, Paul Grills, Earl Edmonston, Muncy Ferguson, Graden Bone and Ralph Combs.
