Esther Yancey McVey of Oxford, daughter of the late William Harrison Yancey and Sarah Jane Porterfield Yancey was born July 30, 1902 in Oxford. She died January 4, 1997 at the White River Health Care Center in Calico Rock. She was 94.

Mrs. McVey was united in marriage to James Earl McVey in 1923 in Oxford. To this union one son was born.

Mrs. McVey was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Pleasant Ridge on August 20, 1919, serving through the years as a singer and piano player. She remained a faithful member until her death, for a total of 77 years.

Survivors include her son, James W. McVey and his wife, Willi Mae of Wichita, Kansas; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and fiends. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1975; six brothers, three sisters and her parents.

Services were held January 6, 1997 at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Pleasant Ridge with Brothers Price Lovelace and Revel Simmons officiating.

Interment was at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford under the direction of Cox-Estes Funeral Home in Salem.
