Sterling Sexton of Oxford, son of the late Jim and Ethel King Sexton was born March 10, 1908 at Wild Cherry. He died August 16, 2000 at Pioneer Nursing Home in Melbourne. He was 92.
Mr. Sexton grew up and attended school in Wild Cherry. He married Lora Helm December 1, 1929 at Oxford. The early years of their marriage they spent farming.
He worked in Indiana two years in the mid-1940s. The family moved back to Arkansas where he owned a service station at Oxford. In 1956 they moved to Wenatchee, Washington, where he worked as a irrigator in several different orchards, until retiring in 1974 from Colombia River Orchards. They moved back to their home in Oxford where he spent the remainder of his life.
Mr. Sexton became a Christian on the farm while picking peas in the field. That was the beginning of a life-long dedication to the Lord. He lived by example his Christian commitment, a strong work ethic and above all honesty. He was a member of Oxford Baptist Church and the Hays Masonic Lodge #289 in Union.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Lora of the home; one daughter; June Huber of Wenatchee, Washington; one granddaughter, Debbie Bernier of Wenatchee, Washington; two brothers, Lowell Sexton and wife Retha of Mountain Home; and Hayden Sexton of Byron; two sisters, Imogene Drown and husband Vernon of Lenexa, Kansas; and Emolene Moser and husband Lavoe of Calico Rock; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gene Huber; his parents; two sisters, Mattie and Viola and one brother, Olen Sexton.
Funeral services were held August 19, 2000 at Oxford Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Bill Kankey, Gaylon Kankey, Jim Sherrell, Joe Grigsby, Darrell Sherrell and Jim Moser. Honorary pallbearers were Wendell Sexton, Larry Moser, Loye Vern Mason, Charles Sherrell, Allen Sherrell and Steve Stevenson.
Interment was at Oxford Cemetery under the direction of Eddies Family Funeral Home of Melbourne.
