Helga's parents were Karl and Emma Selma Bendig Weinstein. She was born in East Prussia and met her future husband, Werner, in 1950 at the German Black Forrest refugee camp in 1950. In January 1955, Helga and Werner traveled to Canada and were married there on 09 Feb 1955. Helga and Werner along with their two children, Karen and Wilfred, moved to Michigan in 1963.
