The Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, January 14, 1921:

Ex-Soldier Dies Near Here

Herbert Hooten, son of Robert Hooten, three miles northwest of Calico Rock, passed away at his home at an early hour last Saturday morning, January 8th, 1921.

Deceased was 16 years of age and the greater part of his life was spent in this vicinity, where he enjoyed the friendship of a host of friends and acquaintances. He entered military service in the fall of 1917, being sent to Camp Pike, where after a few months training, he was assigned to a unit of the ammunition train of the Eighty-Seventh Division. In the summer of 1918 he went with his organization to France. The organization did not go into action at the front, but was detailed for various duties in the Bordeaux area and it was while there that he suffered a severe attack of influenza and pneumonia, being in the hospital several weeks. This illness, combined with his tubercular tendencies, greatly impaired his physical condition, and grew gradually worse from time to time. He returned from France in March, 1919, receiving his discharge from the army soon after.

"Bert" had been up until about a week before his death. On the night preceding his death he was attacked with severe hemorrhages and died within a few hours.

Burial at the Staggs cemetery Sunday, funeral services being conducted by Elder Dave Hively.

[Note: The printed obituary gave his age as 16; however, that was apparently a printing error since he was 26.]
