John D. Freeman and Mecha C. Wright were married August 16, 1876 at Mills Ferry, Ark. in 1879. They established a home 2 miles South of Alleene, Ark., on land deeded to them by WM. Madison Freeman, Father of John D. Mrs. Freeman was the daughter of James Monroe and Amelia Mills Wright of Mills Ferry.
WM. M. Freeman was the first Sheriff of Little River County (1867) and on his plantation 1 and 1/2 miles South of Alleene built the County's first Jail and Court Room, erected a School and Church and established the Freeman Cemetery. He was County Judge in 1883 and Justice of the Peace in 1885.
John D. Freeman held Little River County Teacher's License No. 4 issued in 1877, taught two terms at the Freeman School, was a Justice of the Peace in 1885 and on October 15, 1901 was appointed Commissioner of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition by Governor Jefferson Davis. He met death fighting a fire in the smoke filled dome of the Little River County Court House.
Mr. and Mrs. Freeman moved to Ashdown in 1910. Their children, *Annie E., *WM. S., **Maud Freeman Holman, *Andrew H., *Jesse M., *Carrie A., John D. Jr., Henry C., Edward H., Alva O., Curry B., and Mary Freeman Shaver, *Buried in Freeman Cemetery 1 1/2 miles South of Alleene, **Buried in Little Rock.
