William was born in Illinois. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was in the infantry. After the war, he may have worked as a Machinist (1869) on a ship, the S.S. Rising Star, that traveled between New York and Panama. He married his wife, Mary E., about 1878 in Illinois. They had at least six children and only two that survived them; a son Earl and a daughter Eva. Eva married Abner Stokes in 1898 in Washington Co. Abner and Eva later moved to New Mexico were they remained. William and Mary were residents of the Harmon Township in 1910. Both were laid to rest in the Elm Springs Cemetery.
