Ralph N. Sproles, 87, died peacefully at Wood-Lawn Nursing Home on June 17, 2009, after several years of declining health.
Born on June 21, 1921 in Southwest Virginia, he was the son of John B. and Mary Sproles. He spent his early years on the family farm near Bristol, VA, and his high school years in the East Texas oilfields with his older brother John. He returned to Kingsport, TN, in 1940. He married Laura Lee Miller in 1940 and raised his three sons in Kingsport in the ensuing years.
In 1940, Ralph began his work career with Eastman Kodak in Kingsport. He proudly served his country in World War II in the US Army located in the South Pacific theatre from 1943-1946. He then returned to Eastman in Kingsport. In 1975, Ralph and Laura moved to Batesville, Arkansas for the construction of Eastman's Arkansas plant. They fell in love with the people and the area and chose to remain during his retirement years.
Ralph spent his life caring for his family and friends and serving his church. He was active in church choir and mission work for more than 60 years. He was a deacon and member of First Baptist Church of Batesville.
Ralph was an avid outdoorsman his entire life. Hunting and fishing were passions to be enjoyed with close friends and family.
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Laura Miller Sproles; his parents; his brothers, John and James Sproles; his sister, Anna Lee Miller; his son, Ralph Lynn Sproles; and his granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Sproles.
Ralph is survived by his son, Gary and his wife, Shea, of Kingsport, TN; his son, Don and his wife, Karen, of Knoxville, TN; his special nephew, Jim and his wife, Sandra Sproles of Batesville, AR; nephew, Johnny and his wife, Lois Sproles of Henderson, TX; grandson, Ben Sproles of Richmond, VA; grandson, Matthew Sproles, granddaughter, Lauren Karnitz and her husband, Steve and granddaughter, Amanda Thompson and her husband, Brent all of Knoxville, TN; grand-nephew, Robert and his wife, Kathy Sproles of Little Rock, AR; grand-niece, Sherry Sproles of Memphis, TN and several other nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was at the First Baptist Church of Batesville. Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville under the direction of Willis Funeral Service of (4)
Batesville. Visitation was at the home of Jim and Sandra Sproles.
Pallbearers were Ben Sproles, Matthew Sproles, Robert Sproles, Bill Cox, Jim Kilgore and Norm O'Brien.

Laura Lee (Miller) Sproles, 88, of Batesville, AR, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, in a Batesville nursing home. Born in 1920 in southwest Virginia, she was the daughter of George and Myrtle Miller. She lived in various mining camps as a young girl before moving to Kingsport, TN, as a teenager. She married Ralph N. Sproles in 1941. In 1975, she moved to Batesville with her husband for the construction of the Eastman plant. She became a licensed real estate agent at the age of 60. She was an avid student and teacher of the Bible, having taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Batesville. Survivors include her husband of 67 years; two sons, Gary Sproles of Kingsport and Don Sproles of Knoxville, TN; several nieces and nephews, including Jim Sproles of Batesville; four grandchildren, Matthew Sproles, Laurene Karnitz and Amanda Thompson, all of Knoxville, TN, and Ben Sproles of Richmond, VA; a great-nephew, Robert Sproles of Little Rock, AR; and a great-niece, Sherry Sproles of Memphis, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Howard Miller, Paul Miller, Jay Miller and George Miller Jr.; a son, Ralph Lynn Sproles; and a granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Sproles.
The funeral was at First Baptist Church in Batesville. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville, AR, under the direction of Willis Funeral Service. Pallbearers were Ben Sproles, Matthew Sproles, Robert Sproles, Ken Bolton, Bill Cox and Jim Kilgore. Visitation was at the church and at the home of Jim and Sandra Sproles.
