In Remembrance of W. M. Hays

On Monday morning, Sept 9th, 1935, W. M. Hays was called from his earthly home to a home where all is joy, peace and love. He will meet Mrs. Nola Hays up there, who passed on before Mr. Hays was called home.

To me he was Mr. Hays – to older folks he was just plain Willie. He was the same every day you was with him. I worked for Mr. Hays a number of years on his farm as a farm hand and feel that I have a chance to know his every-day life. He was not perfect – no – but his easy temper made you love him. I never heard him use any rough or profane language; he was kind to his family and friends. Yes, he was a Christian man – a man who read his Bible for wisdom's sake and because he loved God. He would always, after supper before we retired, read a chapter in the Bible and have prayer around the family altar. He earned his bread by the sweat of his brow and it sure was not bread alone. I thought Mrs. Hays to be one of the best cooks we had. She did her very best to make our home a home and I can truly say I never heard them have any cross words in the years I worked there. Now, when I say "our home" I mean just what I say. Their home was my home, I was young when I began work for Mr. Hays, although father and mother were very dear to me; but I was with Mr. Hays more than I could be with them. Mr. Hays would advise me and say I wouldn't do this or that, the same as Father would do. He talked to me the same as he would Aubra or Carmel – always kind and never bossy. He was a church worker and worked because it was his duty, and not to be seen. It I wanted Mr. Hays between the hours of 10 and 12 on Sunday I knew exactly where to find him. He sometimes was late, but he was sure to come, so we generally waited for him.

Men like Mr Hays, Mr. James Simpson and Uncle Jord Bailey are men we miss after they are gone. They are the kind we love for their works here; they were Christian men, the kind I admire. Some day I hope to meet these men over younger. I know their smiles will welcome me.

May God's richest blessings be given to their families and friends, and to Aubra, Letha, Carmel and Mrs. Rosie, I will say: "Weep not, for your loss is heaven's gain.
