About two years ago he suffered a sudden break in health since which time he spent many weeks in various hospitals.

He was born December 31, 1884 on a farm near Violet Hill. After attending Melbourne High School in 1905-06, he entered the University of Arkansas and received a B. A. degree in 1911. He was one of the top ranking students. After being admitted to the bar he opened offices at Melbourne.

Mr. Ashley was elected state senator from Twenty-third district in 1913 and served until 1917. He then was elected prosecuting attorney of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit and served three terms. He was circuit judge in 1922, serving two terms. He made an unsuccessful race for Congress in 1930 and entered the governor's race in 1936, but withdrew before the election. He served as a member of the State Forestry Commission under the administration of former Governor Carl E. Bailey.

Mr. Ashley owned considerable farm acreage in this county. He served for many years as a member of the Melbourne school board.

Ashley, Jr., with the army in North Africa; a brother, William Ashley of Tuckerman; and three sisters, Mrs. J. B.
