W R "Bud" Rice, 84, of Waldron passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 at his home surrounded by his caring family. He was born October 8, 1924 in Waldron to the late Worth & Med (Jones) Rice. He was a Christian, member and trustee of Waldron First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II in the Army Air Corp. Bud was founder of Rice Furniture & Appliance Store in Waldron, AR. He served 18 years as Arkansas State Representative, 1977-1995, and was elected delegate in the Arkansas Constitutional Convention. He was past president of Arkansas Furniture Association, formerly chairman of the board of Mercy Hospital of Scott County, board member of Chambers Bank, Waldron and Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center. Bud and his wife were active in Campers on Mission in numerous mission construction projects. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Thelma Lee Crutchfield Rice; two daughters, Jalene DeVorak and husband Jerry of DesArc, AR, Fran Chisum and husband G L of St Francisville, LA; two sons, Larry Charles Rice and wife Barbara, Terry Rice and wife Jo Ann both of Waldron, Arkansas; one sister, Joyce Matthew of Waldron, and sister-in-law, Opal B Cussons and husband Clayton of Webster, SD. Bud is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Deya DeVorak, Dilene Ewing and husband Steve, Marcus DeVorak and wife Susan, Julie Bles and husband Scott, Amy Spillman and husband Brian, Driston Rice, Jeremy Rice and wife Kim, Paul Rice and wife Sarah; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Si Rice, sister Charlene Brigance and grandson Jonathan Chisum. Square Pallbearers were Mark DeVorak, Driston Rice, Jeremy6 Rice, Paul Rice, Brian Spillman and Steve Ewing. Honorary pallbearers were Tully Works, Warren Gassaway, Johnie Ward, Jim Currier, Neil Cherry, Clyde Hawkins, Rev. Nelson Wilhelm, Jerrel Plummer and Rice Furniture employees.
