McKINLAY, Peter - While the death of P. McKinlay yesterday morning at his home at Garfield did not come as a surprise to the family or his friends and neighbors, it was with great regret that they learned of his passing. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at the Reddick cemetery at 2:30 and will be conducted by Rev. R.M. Thompson of Sulphur Springs, an old friend of the deceased and his family and for a number of years pastor of the Christian church at Garfield. It was held under the auspices of the Masonic order in which Mr. McKinlay had been a leading spirit for many years. Peter McKinlay was 73 years old and had been a resident of Northwest Arkansas for many years. The Democrat editor had known him for thirty years. At one time he was perhaps the best known buyer of railroad ties in this section and his mercantile establishment at Garfield was known far and wide. Poor health (he died of cancer of the stomach) curtailed his activities and in late years he has been but a shadow of his former self. He is survived by his wife and five children: Mrs. Helen Peters, Mrs. Marion Nowlin and James McKinlay, all of Tulsa; John McKinlay of Yocum, Texas and Miss Lucille, at home. A large circle of Benton county folks in all parts of the United States will read with regret of the death of Peter McKinlay and recall in memory the days when he was a hearty, robust community leader and business man.

In the death of Peter McKinlay the people of Garfield and surrounding country mourn the loss of a friend who never failed them in the time of need and a citizen whose character was firmly grounded in the golden virtues of truth, honesty and fair dealing. Mr. McKinlay was a Scotchman and the virtues of that people were born and bred in his nature and his habits. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland March 18, 1854 and was born and raised in the Presbyterian church in which his parents were members. He was educated in Scotland and came to America in 1871. He was married December 16, 1885 to Laura D. Stowe and to them were born eight children, five of whom were living and were present at the time of his death. His devoted wife, Laura McKinlay survives him. The hospitality of their home was extended to thousands, high and low, rich or poor. Mr. McKinlay was a civil engineer of ability and laid out the Frisco railroad through this section of the country. Later he settled at Garfield and carried on many lines of business in that locality until his health began to fail. He joined the Masonic lodge at Rogers in 1893 and was buried by the Masonic fraternity. He died at Garfield September 14, 1927 and was laid to rest in Ruddick cemetery, east of that place, Thursday, the 15th. Owing to the immense crowd gathered to pay their last tribute of respect the services were held in the grove and were conducted by the long-time friend of the family, Rev. R.M. Thompson of Sulphur Springs. Success is not measured by stocks and bonds and this father leaves to his children the rich heritage of a name unstained - honored most by those who knew him best. After life's fitful fever Peter McKinlay sleeps well beside his beloved son and namesake and the winds will blow softly and the sun will shine tenderly above him for he never will fully hurt a fellowman.
