Sixteenth Section Cemetery is located about 2 miles north of Hwy 73, 1 mile east of Columbus on private land owned by Bernard and Bob Webb.
The cemetery was originally located on the old military road that ran from Columbus to Washington and Fulton. It was formerly the Stuart Family Cemetery but is also known as the 16th section cemetery located two miles east of Columbus on Hwy 73W. It is on a farm not protected by any fence. The graveyard is on a hill overgrown with brush and trees. There are other graves that are unmarked, few markers remain, many graves which are slaves. Two of the notable graves in the cemetery are that of Abraham Stuart and his wife Mary (Kuykendall), with his mother Sarah Elizabeth (Fulkerson) wife of John Stuart buried near by. The grave markers for Abraham & Mary were carved from a large slab of bois d’arc tree in the shape of violins. They were still visible in the year 2006. Other graves with no gravestones are listed below.

The late Crit Stuart Sr wrote that the Sixteenth Section of Township 11 Range 26W is the highest point in this vicinity and it was here that Abraham Stuart together with his family and mother settled in 1818. Because of an Indian Mound it is referred to in records as Prairie Mound. In the cemetery this mound where Lucinda and Samuel Hopson, Abraham and wife as well as his mother are buried. Most of the markers were bois d'arc slabs with dates carved on. In the early 1920s a grass fire destroyed most of the slabs and charred others so that dates were obliterated.
According to the book I have, Thomas Trotter, C L Trotter, Fibbie Mercer and David Austin were probably black. It says that blacks also used the cemetery until Macdeonia Cemetery was established.
