GRAY, William Henry, died from a wound received at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. He was born October 29, 1838 in Washington County, Arkansas, the son of Sanford Foley Gray of Tennessee and his wife Elizabeth Brooks Ormes. He was educated in the common schools of the county and at Cane Hill College. He died single. The subject of this sketch was Color Bearer for the 34th Arkansas Infantry Regiment and was as true and brave a soldier as laid down his life for the Confederate Cause.

Sgt William Henry Gray enlisted in the Confederate Army in the summer of 1862, along with two other brothers. In November a third brother enlisted in the same outfit, Company B, 34th Ar Regiment, local boys from Washington Co Ar. On December 7, 1862,the battle of Prairie Grove Ar was fought and all four Gray Brothers participated in the battle. Sgt. William H Gray was the color bearer of the 34th Regiment and was carrying the regimental colors at the battle. He was shot and mortally wounded. He died in Canehill, Ar January 9, 1863. Another brother,James Franklin Gray also was mortally wounded at the Battle of Prairie Grove Ar. He died January 1,1863. Both are buried in this family cemetery. A third brother was sent to tend to the wounded at Canehill, Ar hospital. It is believe he tended to his two brothers till William died On January 9,1863. He returned back to the 34th Regiment, where he died of pneumonia on April 26, 1863, in Little Rock, AR. This was Thomas Washington Gray, the oldest brother. The last brother was Mason Gray, who was given a medical discharge on July 14, 1863. Some believe he was discharge because of the lost of his three brothers.
