SHERIDAN — James Dent Phillips of Sheridan, Arkansas, formerly of Granville, Monongalia County, West Virginia, died Aug 30, 2007, at his home following an extended illness. Jim was born Oct 12, 1935, in Morgantown, West Virginia, the son of the late James Lee and Marion Elizabeth Dent Phillips. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years (married 2 Feb 1957), Shirley Tinney Phillips; his children, Diana and John Holliday of Gainesville, Florida, Kevin D Phillips of Little Rock, Arkansas, Sheila R Rettig of Sheridan, Arkansas, and Lee R Phillips of Sheridan, Arkansas. Additional survivors include his beloved grandchildren, Meghan, Cade, Chase and Cody Holliday of Gainesville, Florida, Madison David and Jack Phillips of Sheridan, Arkansas; a sister, Donna Sue and James Kenyon of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and many other close family members and friends. Mr Phillips retired from Kohler, formerly Sterling Faucet of Morgantown, West Virginia, after 28 years of service. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and received the Expert Rifleman Medal and the Korean Service Award. He earned a bachelor of science degree from West Virginia University. Mr Phillips was a member of the American Production and Inventory Control Society. Jim served as Mayor of Granville, West Virginia, for three terms, initiating and breaking ground for the New Community Building and the Town Park in 1975. He also served as the Monongalia County Chief Tax Deputy under Sheriff Clarence Johnson. Jim was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Morgantown Union Lodge No 4 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Morgantown Chapter No 35. Jim was a charter member of the Pines Country Club in Morgantown. Jim was a longtime Methodist. He was a member of the Granville United Methodist Church and for more than 30 years he was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Sheridan, Arkansas. He was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was also a Sunday School teacher and served on numerous committees during his life. Mr. Phillips was a past president of the Sheridan Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and was selected Rotarian of the Year twice. He was a member and a past president of the Sheridan Golf and Country Club. He was a committee member of the Grant County Democrats and served on the Town of Sheridan Planning Committee. Coaching and teaching baseball, golfing, fishing, reading and being with friends were some of his hobbies. The family’s appreciation goes to Dr B Nair and Dr L Abraham and Arkansas Hospice of Pine Bluff for their expertise and kindness during this period. Funeral services will be Sunday, September 2, 2007, at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church of Sheridan with Reverend Bruce Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Sheridan with Masonic Rites. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 5-8 pm and Sunday morning from 10:00 am-12 noon at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Jack Stone, Jim Lancaster, Don Nixon, Tom Waller, Marshel George, Laith Adams, David Rawls and Steve Myers. Honorary pallbearers: Men’s Bible Class, Sheridan Country Club Golfers, Don DeVall, Dave Brown, Stanley Jerome, George Hatch, Robert Shepherd, Robert Griffith, Arlis East, Jack Irvin, Jack Richardson, Glenn Clelland, Blake Johnson, John Crouse and Marvin Kauffman.
