This sign on Highway 56 points to the Flat Rock Cemetery which is about 1/4 mile north on Izard County Road 234. Flat Rock Cemetery is located 1 mile off Hwy 62, between Band Mill and Calico Rock, Izard County, Arkansas.
The Flat Rock Methodist Church was established in 1873. The land for the church and cemetery was conveyed on December 20, 1873, by Robert Berry to the following trustees: Absolom Langston, Perry Benbrook, John W. Franks, John Arnold, Levi Byram, and Jacob P. Franks.
The original building was constructed of native logs, and was dedicated in October 1880. The pastor at the time was Rev. Alexander.
The cemetery and church are located three miles west of Bandmill, 1/4 mile north of Highway 56, on County Road 234 near the Flat Rock Creek. The cemetery is in a beautiful shady place on flat land beside the church building. There have been few recent burials in this cemetery; however, the cemetery grounds are well maintained. At one time, there was a school building nearby, but that building is no longer standing.
Like many of the old cemeteries in Izard County, many of the older graves are marked by rocks without any identification. There are a number of old style above ground rock crypts covered with large flat rocks, but none of those crypts have any identification on them.
