FAYETTEVILLE — Eugene E. Schlaflin, 97, of Fayetteville died Dec. 14, 2008, at Fayetteville City Hospital. He was born July 2, 1911, in Newark, N.J., to Ernest and Louise Dieler Schlaflin.

On Dec. 21, 1941, aboard the ship SS Charles Pratt, he was among 40 survivors after being torpedoed and spent Christmas in a life raft. In 1955, he took an adventure of the Arctic Circle at the North Pole. He was a Marine engineer and retired in 1961. He moved to Fayetteville in 1958 and raised Charolais cattle.

Survivors include his caregivers, Tony and Sandy Marshall, Ed and Ellen Southern and Terry Treat.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Buckner Cemetery. Dr. Larry Mitchell will officiate.

Arrangements are by Beard's Funeral Chapel in Fayetteville.
