"L.R. Beasley, executive, dies; State ex-officer -- Lee Roy Beasley, aged 71, of El Dorado, a former treasurer of Murphy Oil Corporation and state comptroller from 1949 to 1954, died Tuesday. He was a charter member and former chairman of the Arkansas Petroleum Council and was chairman of its finance committee for 20 years. Mr. Beasley was a graduate of Walton School of Commerce at Chicago and Duke University at Durham, N.C., had been president of the El Dorado Industrial Development Corporation since 1967 and was president and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1973 he was named Outstanding El Dorado Citizen and the same year was chosen for the Outstanding Citizen Award of the Arkansas Economic Development Council. He was former president and former Board chairman of the Ouachita River Valley Association. He was a charter member of the Arkansas Council on Economic Education and was chairman of the Council's finance committee. He also was chairman of the Arkansas Advisory Commission on Tax Reform and the Arkansas Governmental Efficiency Study Commission and a member of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission and the Governor's Economic Development Commission. For six years, Mr. Beasley was chairman of the Governor's Advisory Commission on Education and was Arkansas chairman of the White House Conference on Education established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a charter member of the Dean's Advisory Committee for the College of Business Administration of the University of Arkansas and was secretary of the Governor's Mansion Construction Commission. Mr. Beasley was a member of the El Dorado Board of Education for 12 years and served eight years as its chairman. He was chairman of a local citizens group that worked to raise funds for land purchases for vocational schools and he helped to establish the Oil Belt Vocational School at El Dorado. He also was a member of the Advisory Council to the Southwestern Technical School at Camden and was vice chairman of the Advisory Committee of the El Dorado branch of Southern Arkansas University. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a Mason and a Shriner. Survivors are his stepmother, Mrs. Pearl Beasley of Rye, and a sister, Miss Corinne Beasley of Warren. Funeral was Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial was at Arlington Cemetery by Young's Funeral Directors of El Dorado."
