*WAYLAND ARBOR MEMORIAL PULPIT

Wayland Arbor Cemetery
Izard County,
Arkansas

This memorial pulpit stands in the front of the current Wayland Arbor in the Wayland Arbor Cemetery. It is inscribed as follows:
IN MEMORIAM
HENRY
WAYLAND
1808 1877
FOUNDER OF
WAYLAND ARBOR
FOR WORSHIP
1873

The Wayland Arbor Cemetery with the Wayland Arbor situated inside the cemetery is named in memory of Henry Wayland, who donated 10 acres of land for the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the cemetery in 1873. There is a memorial stone near the entrance to the Wayland Arbor Cemetery which indicates that Wayland Arbor was founded by Henry Wayland in 1868. It has always had an arbor. The original one was a "brush arbor." The current one is a wooden structure, and is used for special occasions such as Easter sunrise services and Decoration Day. An occasional funeral is held in the Arbor.

Henry Wayland was buried in the the Wayland Arbor Cemetery and he shares a double gravestone in the cemetery with his second wife, Mary E. Matthews Wayland.

The Wayland Arbor Cemetery is located about 1-1/2 miles south of Dolph on County Road #41.
