*WAYLAND MEMORIAL STONE

Wayland Arbor Cemetery
Izard County,
Arkansas

This is a memorial stone near the entrance to the Wayland Arbor Cemetery. It is not a grave marker. He shares a double gravestone in the cemetery with his second wife, Mary E. Matthews Wayland. This stone indicates that he founded the arbor, which became known as Wayland Arbor, in 1868. He deeded 10 acres of land in 1873 for use by the Methodist Episcopal Church South and for the use as a cemetery. The church arbor and cemetery became known as Wayland Arbor in his memory.

The Wayland Arbor Cemetery is located about 1-1/2 miles south of Dolph on County Road #41. It has always had an arbor. The original one was a "brush arbor." The present one is a wooden structure, and is used for special occasions such as Easter sunrise services and Decoration Day. An occasional funeral is held in the Arbor.
