John Emmett Pittman Jr., 78, of Greenbrier, formerly of Jackson, Miss., died Thursday.

He was born July 8, 1925, in Coila, Miss., to the late John Emmett Pittman Sr. and Concha Hutcherson Pittman. He was an Army veteran of W.W.II, receiving several medals including a Purple Heart and three Bronze Oak leaf clusters.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Christine Pittman; sons, Don and wife, Sandy, of Cleveland, Miss., Ben and wife, Dana, of Raymond, Miss.; three daughters, Gale Powell of Hattiesburg, Miss., Penny McGuffee and husband, Harry, of Florence, Miss., and Cindy Walsh and husband, George, of Greenbrier; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a brother, James Roland Pittman and wife, Elaine, of Bolton, Miss., and a sister, Arbie Magee and husband, Jimmy, of Rolling Fork, Miss.

He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Emmett Pittman; and a brother, Alec Pittman of Pearl, Miss.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
