Leo Ivie Killed While Fighting on Italian Front

Pvt. Otis Leo Ivie, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ivie of Pineville, is a casualty of war. This sad intelligence was conveyed in a War Department telegram received Monday, which stated that he was killed March 3.

Pvt. Ivie had been in action on the Italian theatre for several months and has been in the Cassino area since the opening of that front. No details were given in the message, which stated that a letter follows.

Pvt. Ivie was inducted for service December 16, 1942. He received his basic training at Camp Rucker, Ala. He went overseas April 29, 1943, landing in Africa. Later he was transferred to Sicily and Italy. He was wounded during the early stages of the Italian campaign and was sent back to Africa for hospitalization, after which he returned to Italy.

He was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy and the Blue Ribbon for action in the African campaign. The last letter received from him was dated March 2.

Leo as he was known by his host of friends was born at Cross Roads and practically all his life was spent in this vicinity. In August of 1941 he was married to Miss Tressie Smith, to which union a son, Leo Junior was born.

Besides his wife, 19 months-old son and parents, deceased is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Mitchell of Bexar and Misses Hazel and Nina Faye Ivie of the home. Also surviving are his grandmothers, Mrs. Tennessee Ivie of Pineville and Mrs. Ader Smith of Forty-Four.

Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, July 16, 1948:

Body of Pvt. Ivie Due to Arrive Thursday

The body of Pvt. Otis Leo Ivie, who lost his life March 3, 1944, while serving with the U. S. Army in Italy, will arrive here Thursday, July 12, Mr. and Mrs. Allen J. Ivie of Pineville, parents of deceased, have been advised.

The funeral rites with military honors will be held Friday after noon at Cross Roads and burial will be in Cross Roads Cemetery.

Note: In the first article about his death, it was indicated that he married Miss Tressie Smith. Her obituary gives her maiden name as Jones, and indicated that she was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Jones, Jr. The second article apparently has an error in the composition. It indicates that his body would arrive on Thursday, July 12. July 12, 1944, was on a Monday; however, August 12 would be on a Thursday, and that is the date that was probably intended. As an added note, his wife died July 10 and burial was July 11. Her obituary was in the same edition of the Calico Rock Progress as the article about the return of her husband's body.
