MELBOURNE — Leon Cooper, 85, of Melbourne died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at his home.
Born May 25, 1920, in Knob Creek, he was the son of Henry Garland Cooper and Grace Ester Knowles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a private in Germany during World War II. He was united in marriage to Gladys Rodman on April 7, 1944, in Oxford.
He worked in the state revenue office from 1954 to 1959, was Izard County assessor from 1959 to 1966 and served as Izard County judge from 1969 to 1974. He was a cattle farmer and a member of Belview Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kay Cooper of Brockwell and Lindell Cooper of Cabot; a daughter, Gaye Smith of Melbourne; two brothers, Bob Cooper and Kenneth Cooper, both of Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Ina Faye Smith of Kansas City, Mo., and Jean Myers of Independence; six grandchildren, Tom Smith, Al Smith, Grant Smith, Jeff Cooper, Jason Cooper and Gary Cooper; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lowell Cooper; and two sisters, Melba Clem and Marie Blankenship.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Belview Baptist Church with Ray Carneal and Dave Seaborn officiating. Burial will be in Combs Cemetery under the direction of Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Pallbearers will be Tom Smith, Al Smith, Grant Smith, Jeff Cooper, Jason Cooper and Gary Cooper.
Honorary pallbearers are Bob Rector, Lowell Melton, Deb Musgrove and J.C. Grills.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight.
