Detective Joseph Tucker Fisher – Died February 7, 1995
Joseph “Tuck” Fisher was thirty-four years old when he died. He had graduated from Bigelow High School in Bigelow, Arkansas in 1978. He joined the Police Department on November 28, 1983. On February 17, 1984, he graduated from Recruit School near the top of his class. Following graduation, he was assigned to the Patrol Division where he remained until being transferred to his assignment as a Narcotics Detective in 1988. Detective Fisher was an original member of the Street Narcotics Unit. He had established himself as a dedicated, loyal and professional police officer who took great pride in his work and who was committed to two young daughters who survive him. “Tuck” was an active member of the department’s softball team. He was remembered by his supervisors as one of the most well-liked and respected members of the division, always ready to pitch in and one of the first to volunteer. A memorial to his memory hangs in the Special Investigations Division offices as a reminder to the men and women of that division of the sacrifice he paid. On February 7, 1995, members of the Street Narcotics Unit went to an apartment complex on Butler Road to serve a search and seizure warrant. Drugs had been purchased from a particular apartment earlier in the day. Detective Fisher and Detective Fred Lee were a part of the entry team. After identifying themselves, the detectives made entry into the apartment and were immediately met by gunfire. Detectives Fisher and Lee and other members of the entry team managed to return fire and disable the suspect. However, Detective Fisher sustained a gunshot wound which resulted in his death and Detective Lee suffered a serious head wound, from which he recovered. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with Capitol Felony Murder and Criminal Attempt to Commit Capitol Felony Murder. On Friday, February 10, 1995, a crowd estimated at 2,000 people attended the funeral service for Detective Fisher at Agape Church. Detective Fisher was posthumously awarded the Police Shield for his actions in this matter by Chief Louie C. Caudell.
