Herron Thompson Whitfield, 94

CALICO ROCK--Herron Thompson Whitfield of Pineville died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Calico Rock at age 94 years, 3 months and 5 days.

He was born Sept. 24, 1914, at Cross Roads, to the Rev. Young Whitfield and Mary Gabriella Herron Whitfield. He married Nellie Doris Hively Dec. 25, 1931, and to this union six children were born. When he was 9, he joined Pineville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he later served as deacon, elder and Sunday school superintendent. He was treasurer of the church for 50 years and was stated clerk and treasurer of White River Presbytery for 34 years. He served on Pineville Cemetery Committee for many years and contributed numerous hours of volunteer labor.

Although he worked at several occupations, he was first and last a farmer. He worked as a section hand on Missouri Pacific Railroad, hauled lumber for Ducker Lumber Co. and was a carpenter who built homes and worked on heavy construction. He worked at Bull Shoals Dam, Greer's Ferry Dam and on the Arkansas River lock and dam project.

He loved his family and friends and was an accomplished genealogist and familiy historian, not only of his own family, but of many others who lived in this area. He had a remarkable memory for family stories with names, dates and events. His children have preserved much of this history on tape and on paper.
