Mrs. Holmes, Former county Official, Dies
Rison, Arkansas paper November 1952

Mrs. Birdie Hollis Holmes, aged 75, of Memphis, a former Cleveland county treasurer, died unexpectedly Saturday midnight at the home of her daughter in Monroe, La., where she was on a visit.

Mrs. Holmes, widow of the late Atty. Pitt Holmes, served as county treasurer for two terms, 1925 to 1929, and had the distinction of being the only woman ever elected to a county office in Cleveland. She was active in the women's work at the Methodist church during her long residence in Rison. She removed to Memphis shortly after retiring as county treasurer.

A daughter of the late Judge William T. and Sarah Herndon Hollis, prominent early residents of Cleveland and Bradley counties, Mrs. Holmes was born in this county, and removed to Rison in early life. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church of Memphis.

Surviving Mrs. Holmes are four daughters Mrs. D. B. Lanham of Memphis, Mrs. Zell Smith of Monroe, Mrs. Roy E. Massengill of Longview, Tex., and Mrs. Thomas A. Turner of Memphis;, a son, Pitt Hollis Holmes of Memphis, and two brothers, Carl Hollis of Warren and Mack Hollis of Pine Bluff; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Rison Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Barry Bailey, the pastor, and Rev. Harold D. Sadler of Jazen, lifelong friend of the family, and the Rev. Roy M. Davis, Presbyterian minister of Little Rock.

Burial was in the family lot in Rison's Greenwood cemetery. Buie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sadler, Van McKinney, Edgar McKinney, Bert Harrison, Harry Speaks, Abe Smith, J. E. Smith, Leland Ackerman, Leon Moore, Searcy Elrod, Guy Cameron, Herman Davidson and M. L. Wilson.
