Died Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas.
Son of Enoch Walter & Annie Allice Smith.
Married Melba Pauline Whisenant, December 7, 1945, Leslie, Searcy County, Arkansas.

Martic Jay Smith, 79, of Melbourne died Dec. 25, 2003, at Batesville.

Born Aug. 25, 1924, in Haleyville, Okla., he was the son of Enoch Smith and Annie Smith.

He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 101st Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged attaining the rank of private first class and was a Purple Heart recipient. He spent his working years as a office machine service man. He married Melba Pauline Whisenant Dec. 7, 1945, in Leslie, Ark., and to this union 10 children were born. He was of the Church of Christ faith.

Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law: J.W. and Mia Smith of Nelano, La., Willis and Teresa Smith of Viola, Buford and Belinda Smith of Judsonia, Chuck and Gail Smith of Sidney, and Mark and Lynn Smith of Horseshoe Bend; four daughters and sons-in-law: Wyettia and Dean Brown of Franklin, Margaret and Carrell Morehead of Melbourne, Joyce and Johnnie Smith of Melbourne, and Sarah and Billie Haile of Pangburn; 24 grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Donald Wayne Smith; two sisters; a brother; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was Dec. 27 at Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel with Steve Stevenson officiating. Burial was at Violet Hill Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Eddie'?s Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Pallbearers were Charles Smith, Ronnie Treat, James Campbell, David Smith, Tracy Conyers and Cody Rush. Honorary Pallbearer was David Crosby.
