Masayoshi Uema, 77, of Little Rock died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007. He was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Lima, Peru, and was the oldest son of Chiyokichi Uema and Matsu Oshiro. He returned to Japan from Peru in 1942. He served in the Japanese Air Force during World War II, and was enlisted as a Kamikaze pilot. Fortunately, the war ended before his training was complete. After World War II, he worked for the United States Merchant Marine over 30 years. He achieved the rank of Chief Mate preceding his retirement from the Merchant Marine in 1986. In his retirement years, he lived in the Bryant area. His hobbies were short-wave radio, wildlife watching and gardening. He has also enjoyed his Chihuahuas. His survivors include his oldest daughter, Kaoru Maner and her husband, Errol Porter of West Fork, Ark.; his youngest daughter, Masae Wise and her husband, James of Little Rock; and two granddaughters, Sophia and Sylvia Wise of Little Rock.
