DR. J. A. ALLEN DIED MONDAY
Was Prominent Physician and Highly Respected Citizen Here For Many Years
Dr. J. A. Allen, 70 years old, , a prominent physician and well known and highly respected citizen of this city for many years, died at his home,
No. 702 South Cherry street, yesterday morning at 4 o'clock after a lengthy illness, the last few days of which he was unconscious and his death was not unexpected.
Dr. Allen was born in Hickorywith, Tipton county, Tennessee, Nov. 18, 1841. He came to Arkansas shortly after the Civil War and settled near
Monticello. He came to Pine Bluff about 16 years ago, later going to Little Rock and then to Colorado, but subsequently returned to Pine Bluff and made this city his home. He was married in 1897 to Mrs. Mary J. Hall, of this city, and she, with one daughter, Mrs. T. Y. Batterton, of Gooding, Idaho, survive. The daughter was expected to arrive here last night to attend the funeral.
Dr. Allen was a devout member of and an elder of the Presbyterian church for a number of years. His life was filled with benevolence and charity and he never lost an opportunity for doing good. . He had the respect of every citizen of this section and as a physician he stood high in the estimation of his brother practitioners.
The funeral will probably be held this afternoon from the family residence, conducted by Rev. J. I. Norris, assisted by Rev. Carrol D. Wood. The
following will be the pallbearers: T. B. Lyle, E. B. Taylor, Dr. Wm. Crutcher, T. Y. Murphy, John Ezell, D. W. Richey, W. C. Pope and J. G. Taylor.
Judge John Barrow, of Little Rock, will arrive In the city today to attend the funeral.
