James H. Mershon was originally from London, Kentucky and of French descent. He first served in the Civil War with the Confederates in Texas and later joined the Second Kansas Cavalry with the Union Army. He rose from the rank of Private to Sergeant before mustering out at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. After the war he served as Deputy US Marshall from 1875 to 1890. His tombstone gives him the rank of Captain and notes that he was one of Judge Isaac Parker's (the Hanging Judge) leading officers. Over the years he had famous deputies working for him such as Bass Reaves. His most famous arrest was the notorious black outlaw Bully Joseph in the Choctaw Nation. Mershon and his wife, Minnie were also business proprietors, owning a grocery store and the Mershon Hotel in Denison, Texas. He died April 16, 1899 in a Terrell, Texas asylum after going insane in his home in Denison. He is one of eighty-two deputy United States marshals of the Parker court to be buried in Oak Cemetery.
