Dink PUGH

Hand Cemetery
Baxter County,
Arkansas

Prior to the impounding of Lake Norfork, graves from four cemeteries--Hand Cemetery, Russell Cemetery, Kerley Cemetery, and Etheridge Cemetery--were disinterred and moved to a new cemetery under the supervision of the Corps of Engineers. The Corps of Engineers named the new cemetery the New Hand Cemetery, but the newly formed cemetery association quickly dropped the "New" from the name.

There were 14 graves moved from the Russell Cemetery. One of which was identified in the Corps of Engineer records as Dink Pugh. The grave did not have a gravestone; however, at some point, the cemetery association made home crafted gravestones for the unmarked graves, and in so doing, they changed the spelling of the surname for Dink Pugh to Pough.

Some Russell family members think that Dink Pugh was in fact Anzoleth Kansas "Dink" Russell Pugh, the daughter of John Melvin & Leannah Ino Van Hook Russell, and the wife of William K. Pugh, Jr. William K. Pugh is buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Baxter County, Arkansas, and the inscription on his gravestone indicates that he was the husband of A. K. Pugh.

Anzoleth Kansas Russell was born July 26, 1853, in Macon County, North Carolina. It is thought that she died around 1899 in Baxter County, Arkansas.
