Roman "R.C." Plugge, 85, of Altus, Ark., died Monday, May 16, 2011, in Fort Smith, after a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Hartman, Ark., to John Plugge and Marie Eveld Plugge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Ralph Plugge, Gilbert Plugge, and Wilfred Plugge.

He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver, Antonia (Toni) Post Plugge; four children, Jan Davis and husband, Bill, of Dallas, Texas, Roman Plugge Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Dallas, Texas, John Plugge and wife, Kathy, of Houston, Texas, and Christina Dyer and husband, Bob, of McAllen, Texas; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings, Estella Mae Hilton of Clarksville, Ark., Delores Wiederkehr of Altus, Ark., and Richard Plugge of Hartman, Ark.; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Plugge of Clarksville, Ark., and Josephine Plugge of Chicago, Ill.

Roman served in the United States Army European Theater during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., with a degree in architecture. He began his career in Chicago, Ill., then moved to Dallas, Texas, and worked with Grayson Gill, Inc., for over 30 years. He and his wife, Toni, returned to Arkansas in 2000. They are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Altus.

A rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at St. Mary's Church in Altus. Funeral mass was at 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at St. Mary's Church with Abbot Jerome Kodell, OSB, officiating. Burial service followed at St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark, Ark. Pallbearers were his seven grandsons.
