Cletis A. Churchwell, 93, of Batesville, Arkansas died Monday, November 21, 2005, in Batesville at the Woodlawn Nursing Home. He was born April 17, 1912, in Roberta, Oklahoma. He was the son of Wiley Franklin Churchwell and Cordia Maria (Jeffrey) Churchwell. He came to Locust Grove, Arkansas the first time in 1934 and he met Neva Audrey Massey. He then returned Oklahoma, and then moved back to Arkansas a couple of times before he married Neva on September 12, 1936. They had three children, Wylie Cleveland Churchwell, Cleta Faye Churchwell, and Shirley Kay Churchwell White. Cletis attended the Locust Grove Baptist Church. Three of his great-grandsons are in the Marines and one is in the Army serving in Iraq. He was the widower of Neva Churchwell. He was a retired boiler operator for Gulf Oil and attended Locust. Funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Locust Grove Baptist Church with burial at Locust Grove Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville. Officiating was Brian Garrett, Neil Wilkerson and Bob Dailey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; Neva Massey Churchwell; a daughter Cleta Holden; three brothers; Ira Churchwell, Hugh Churchwell and R.D. Churchwell; and three sisters; Zola Churchwell, Karene Ard, and Hazel Gilbert.
He is survived by a daughter; a son; a sister; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to Locust Grove Cemetery Association, P.O. box 72, of Locust Grove, AR 72550.
