Road crash kills highway worker
Painting truck hit from behind

CORNERSTONE — An Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department employee died Wednesday in a traffic accident while painting lane markings on a state highway in Jefferson County, the Arkansas State Police reported.

Vaughn Pierson, 68, of Mountain Home died after the paint truck in which he was a passenger was hit from behind by a Mack truck belonging to Waste Management Inc. The paint truck was traveling at low speed to paint lane markings on the highway, the state police said.

Pierson was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 2:20 p.m. accident on Arkansas 88, about a half-mile west of the community of Cornerstone. Both vehicles were traveling west, the state police said.

The crash injured three others. Gary Hester, 33, of Hardy, who was driving the paint truck, and Roderick Gaston, 28, of Pine Bluff, who was driving the Mack truck, were treated at Jefferson Regional Medical Center and released, a hospital spokesman said. Brittney Tillmon, 34, also of Pine Bluff, a passenger in the Mack truck, was listed in fair condition Thursday at the hospital.

The crash underscored the dangers to highway department employees, said Glenn Bolick, adepartment spokesman.

“It’s a tragic accident,” he said. “Our prayers go out to the employee’s family and his coworkers.”

Pierson’s death is the first on-site department death since May 7, 2009, when Mark Abbott, 45, of Conway, a department inspector, died after being crushed by a crane at a construction site in Benton. In June 2008, an employee working in a construction zone in Newport was killed after a vehicle struck him.
