Crash claims doctor, 3 sons

The plane of the Springdale, Ark., family is spotted in an Oklahoma wilderness area.

HONOBIA, Okla. — The bodies of a doctor and his three young children who disappeared as they flew home to Arkansas were found Monday in the rocky forests of southeastern Oklahoma.

Airborne state police from Arkansas spotted the plane at 9:40 a.m. about halfway up a mountain in the Kiamichi Mountains. Ground troops confirmed it was the aircraft missing since Saturday night.

"It would appear that the wreckage was scattered through a heavily wooded area, very rugged terrain," said Bill Sadler, public information officer for the state police in Little Rock, Ark.

"The plane disintegrated as it went into the ground," said Lt. Derral Punneo of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. "There's not any recognizable pieces."

The Oklahoma patrol identified the dead pilot as Dr. Bruce Brown Jr., 36, of Springdale, Ark. Brown's sons Hayden, Joshua and Weston — ages 8, 4 and 3 — were also aboard.

The Oklahoma patrol did not immediately know which boy was which age.

The 1959 Cessna 182 took off from Dallas' Love Field on Saturday for Springdale.

Capt. Charles C. Newcomb of the Oklahoma Wing of the Civil Air Patrol said the aircraft's last reported position was 50 miles southeast of McAlester.

By Sunday, about 150 people had reported to McAlester Regional Airport, coordinating point for the search. They combed areas of Pushmataha, LeFlore and McCurtain counties in the general vicinity of where the plane had dropped from radar.

Ben Frizzell, spokesman for the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management, said the wreckage turned up seven miles north of Honobia in a rocky and heavily forested area of Pushmataha County.

"What we're talking about is the Kiamichi wilderness," Frizzell said. "There's a reason they call it wilderness."

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were called to the scene. Frizzell said those agencies will be the ones to determine the cause and time of the crash.

Much of the property in the area is owned by timber industry giant Weyerhaeuser Co.

Punneo said logging roads provided the only access to the site.
