Gordon A. Long, 67, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 1994, at Washington Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 7, 1926 at Monett, Mo., the son of Arch and Gladys Flossie McCracken Long. He was a 1944 graduate of Monett High School and entered the University of Arkansas in 1944, graduating in 1950 with a bachelors' degree in science, after having served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

His career included eight years as coach at Joplin (Mo.) High School. His principal hobbies included family, friends, golf and sporting events, not surprising when you consider Gordon's sports-related career while at the UA, which included being a four year letterman in football, a three year letterman in baseball and having served as captain of the baseball team. He received the National "Swede" Nelson Sportsmanship award, presented by the Gridiron Club of Boston. He also received the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame Meritorious Service award in Feb. 1991. He was a salesperson for Arkola Sand and Gravel for 35 years, retiring in 1992.

Gordon was a member of the Fayetteville Noon Lions Club since 1959, having served as president in 1974. The Construction industry of Northwest Arkansas recognized Gordon for his contribution to excellence in Arkansas construction. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Fayetteville.

He is survived his wife, Jo-Nell "Jody" Long of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Stephen Selig of Little Rock, and Leslie and Ken Posey of Fayetteville; two sisters, Virginia Long of Monett, Mo., and Vera Wilson of Tulsa, Okla.; two grandsons, Drew Selig and Matt Selig; and four granddughters, Clare Selig, Kenlie Posey, Blake Posey, and Alex Posey.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jack Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Moore's Chapel. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church - Good Sam, P.O. Box 1106, Fayetteville, 72702, or Gordon Long Memorial Fund, Razorback Foundation, 1 Mcllroy Plaza, Fayetteville, 72701.
