Jay Milton Baker, 55, passed away October 25, 2004, at his residence. He was born into a military family in Honolulu, Hawaii. He began his naval career prior to completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He attended medical school at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship and residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia in 1985. He remained on the OB-GYN staff there for several years and subsequently joined the research department at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

He is survived by his daughter, Caryn Baker of Virginia Beach, VA; parents, Dr. Robert L. Baker (Rear Adm., MC, USN, RET.) and Rebecca Baker of Mountain Home, Arkansas; three sisters, Becky Baker Keadle of Seattle, Washington, Betsy Baker Pepper and husband John Pepper of Carthage, Texas, and Brenda Baker (CAPT., select, NC, USN) of Annapolis, Maryland; two brothers, Dr. Robert L. Baker, Jr. and wife Laura of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dr. Bruce Baker (CAPT., MC, USN) and wife Susan of Camp Pendleton, California; three nephews, Kevin Keadle, Chris Keadle and Brandon Baker; four nieces, Michelle Pepper, Jennifer Pepper, Marissa Baker, and Madison Baker; and two grandchildren, Justin Theis and Matthew Theis. He was predeceased by his mother, Betty Jo (Hill) Baker.

Jay was blessed with a brilliant mind, poetic soul and gentle heart. He used his gifts to bring hope and healing to others and promote progressive discoveries in science and medical technology. He had a joyous appreciation for all the wonders of nature; his contagious enthusiasm and adventurous spirit has left a strong legacy in our hearts and he will be cherished forever.

Memorial donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy or a charity of one’s choice. The family will gather for a private burial and memorial service in Mountain Home. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
