Dorothy Nell Alley, 98, longtime Mountain Home resident, died early Sunday at Hospice of the Ozarks, Hospice House. She was born November 28, 1911 to Joseph Duncan and Minerva Gertrude (Byler) Alley in Mountain Home, where she attended school, graduating from Mountain Home High School. She later attended Draughon’s Business School in Lubbock, Texas. She returned to Mountain Home in 1940 and went to work in retail sales at Robertson Store. During her career as an executive secretary, she worked in New York City and Dallas, Texas. In the early 1970’s, she returned to Mountain Home to care for her mother.
Dorothy and her sister, Louise, owned and operated a gift shop, The Serendipity, on Highway 62 East during the late 1970’s. Dorothy began a career in Baxter County Government in the early 80’s as Deputy Clerk in charge of Voter Registration. An active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for many years, she was member of the Vestry and was a Lector. She was a member of the Mountain Home School Board, secretary-treasurer of Mountain Home Cemetery, Inc. for 12 years, and was a member of the Board of Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce. Dorothy was one of the early organizers of the Mountain Home Business and Professional Women and later served as Arkansas State President in 1940.
Miss Alley is survived by her sister, Louise Rigney, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Four Nephews: Mike Alley of Mountain Home, Floyd Foster of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Joe Foster of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Roger Foster of Dallas, Texas. Three Nieces: Pat Stubblefield, of San Antonio, Texas; Janet and Jeanie Alley, both of Mountain Home. In addition to relatives, she is survived by a God-son, Nicholas Roseman of Hot Springs, Arkansas and a namesake, Dorothy Anne Wiley of San Diego, California
A Visitation for Ms. Alley will be Noon – 9:00pm with family receiving friends from 6-8pm Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Roller Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 10:00am Thursday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with The Reverend James McDonald Officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Home Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church or Hospice of the Ozarks Hospice House.
