Dr. Friedman Sisco Dies

Dr. Friedman Sisco, 64, dean of physicians in Springdale, died Friday night in Memorial Hospital. He was the second of three generations of his family to practice medicine in Springdale.

Dr. Sisco first joined his father, Dr. C.P. Sisco, in practice here in 1939, but World War II interrupted his civilian medical career. He returned to Springdale in 1945 and had maintained an active practice until his death.

He was one of three men instrumental in establishing Springdale Memorial Hospital in 1948. He and his mother were among the first contributors to fund raising campaign for the hospital and he, the late Luther Johnson and Harvey Jones donated the land on which the first hospital was constructed.

In addition to his activities in the medical profession, Dr. Sisco was a member of the First State Bank board of directors and founder of Arkansas Surgical Supply. He was active in the Republican Party in Washington County and Arkansas, serving in offices at both levels. He also was recognized for his musical ability and continued to play in a brass band he formed, "The Bandaids.”

Dr. Sisco was born to Dr. C.P. and Lucy Sims Sisco at Osage on Aug. 12, 1913. He graduated from Springdale High School in 1931, and completed his requirements at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine at Little Rock in 1936. He interned at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and joined his father in practice here in 1939.

Dr. Sisco entered the Army as a captain in 1941 at Ft. Sill, Okla., where he was a regimental surgeon with the 142nd Field Artillery. Later, he served in the South Pacific as chief of the surgical section of the 29th Evacuation Hospital in New Guinea. He left the Army in 1945 as a lieutenant-colonel.

He returned to Springdale then to continue his practice, and completed post-graduate work at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, specializing in colon and gastric surgery, gynecology, trauma and fractures. He served as chief of staff of Washington County Hospital (now Washington Regional Medical Center) during its first years and later in the same capacity at Springdale Memorial. He was president of the Washington County Medical Society in 1946 and city health officer in 1953. He was also on the staff of Fayetteville City Hospital and Geriatric Center.

At the time of his death he was associated in practice with his son, Dr. Charles P. Sisco, in the clinic which be founded in 1953.

He was a member of the county and Arkansas Medical Societies, American Medical Association, Southwest Surgical Congress, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Association of Abdominal Surgeons, Southern Medical Association, American Association of Railway Surgeons, University of Arkansas Alumni Association, Springdale Rotary Club, Washington County Republican Men's Club, Fayetteville-Springdale Elks Lodge, American Legion and VFW.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Charles Sisco of Springdale and Dr. Kenneth Sisco of Baltimore, Md., and two grandchildren, David and Carol Ann Sisco of Springdale.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sisco Chapel. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.
