HEWITT, Emily (Carrick) - (edited) Mother is dead. She will be seen sitting by the old hearthstone no more. The wrinkled face, expressive of patient suffering, we shall see not again. The low melodious voice will greet not our ears this side of the tomb. All that is mortal of Emily (Carrick) Hewitt now rests in the old cemetery at Friendship. Born, Jan. 25, 1832; married to Alexander Hewitt Sep. 16, 1847; came to Washington county, Ark. in 1855; she was the mother of nine children, five of whom survive her, four have passed over the dark valley before her, W.N., J.M. and Emma Hewitt live in Springdale, G.D. Hewitt and Mrs. Alice Hartly live in Oklahoma; died March 31, 1903; aged 71 years, 2 months, 6 days. How feeble the tribute we pay to a noble mother! Yet how much we owe her! Very little is known to the writer of Sister Hewitt's early life, of the joys and sorrows of girlhood days. No doubt in early life the foundation for her noble character was laid. A noble, wife, a patient mother, a kind neighbor, a devoted christian, all may truthfully be said of her if the testimony of those who have known her longest and best count for anything. The death of Grandma Hewitt removed an ancient landmark. It was impossible to think of Hewitt Springs without thinking of the old farm house on the hill and especially of the kind and motherly old lady who had grown old on that self-same spot, caring for a large family and showing sincere kindness to the many guests who came and went. Many a man as he reads these lines will gratefully remember her kindness to him as a barefoot boy. But for some time since the death of her husband and scattering of the children she has been waiting "till the shadows are a little longer grown."

HEWITT, Emily - When Mrs. Emily Hewitt, residing some 4 miles east of Springdale, died Tuesday about noon, one of the best loved women in this section passed to her reward. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, conducted by Eld. I.M. Phillips and Geo. Moneyhun and the remains were interred in the Friendship cemetery. A large gathering of people from the surrounding country assembled to pay parting tribute to their friend and neighbor. The deceased was almost 71 years of age and for many years had made her home on the premises where she died. Her husband has been dead for several years. Hewitt's spring derived its name from Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt, their home being on the hill just above the spring. The News regrets that we have not more date at hand for a more extended notice. Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt were were the parents of ten children, five of them living. All the surviving children were present at the funeral. They are as follows: Geo. Hewitt of Oklahoma; Mrs. Alice Hartley of Chickasaw Nation; W.N. Hewitt of Fayetteville; J.M. Hewitt of Springdale and Mrs. Emma Goodman, who made her home with her mother. Mrs. Hewitt had been in feeble health for some time as the result of a fall a few years ago but her death was due to pneumonia. She had been sick only since Sunday. Deceased was a member of the South Methodist Church. Mrs. Hewitt was a good woman in all they the term implies and was a friend to all. The News tenders sympathy to the bereaved family.
